Who runs it

WebLothian is Ben Harvie: born and brought up in East Lothian, and back working with businesses here after twenty years away building software, much of it for American technology companies. Three of the startups he worked at were bought: one for over a million dollars, one for seven hundred and fifty million, and one by one of America's largest companies. He has also worked for one of the hundred biggest companies in America (the S&P 100), and he has spent a long time learning what actually makes software useful to the people paying for it.

Relax, the three-year-old is not running the business. That's me in 1997, meeting my first computer. The grown-up version runs things now, and is still as delighted to be building and creating.

Why it exists

Small businesses get offered two bad deals online. One is a page builder with a monthly fee, cheap until you need something it cannot do. The other is an agency with a five-figure minimum and an account manager standing between you and whoever is actually building the thing. WebLothian is the middle: work built properly, a fixed price agreed in writing, and the person who built it on the other end of the phone. The cost is kept affordable on purpose, because a local business that is priced out of keeping up is the one that gets left behind.

What that gets you

The technology moves whether or not your business does, and being left behind is a slow process that is very hard to reverse. The point of all of this is blunt: more sales, and customers who are happier dealing with you. A website that gets found, software that stops the admin eating your week, and AI doing the repetitive parts, all of it done properly by somebody who has built these things for much bigger companies before.

What Ben does

Design, building, security, search and AI, all from one person. In practice that means a job can go from "our website is embarrassing" to a site that is built, secure, easy to find and looked after, without being handed between four suppliers who each blame the others.

How the work is done

One customer at a time, with full attention, while the portfolio is being built. That is a deliberate constraint rather than a limitation to apologise for: it is why a build takes weeks rather than months, and why nobody here is juggling your project against four others. It is also part of how the cost stays affordable.
