Websites and software I have built, live today

Four projects you can visit today: a family-run food business in Prestonpans that now takes orders online, an online card game built in three days, a retro games shop taking card payments, and six online shops, each with its own name and look, all run as one. All four are live and linked below, so you can judge them for yourself rather than take my word for it.

A four-player game of Kalooki in progress on k40online.com: a green card table with three opponents, the stock and discard piles, laid melds, and the player's own thirteen cards along the bottom with a turn timer beside them

K40 Online Kalooki

k40online.com

K40 Online Kalooki lets up to four people play UK Kalooki together, live, on a phone, a tablet or a computer, and it can be saved to the home screen like an app. It was built for a client, in three days. It has passed a security review, runs on its own server and is backed up every night. It is here because a card game has the same hard parts as plenty of business software: the rules have to be fair, the balances have to be right to the penny, and the owner has to be able to see exactly what happened and when.

The services behind it: Booking and reminder software, Website creation, Website security and Management and maintenance

What this means for your business

The hard parts of a system like this are not the screens. They are being fair, keeping the numbers right and showing the owner exactly what happened. A booking system, a loyalty scheme or a members' area needs the same three things at a smaller scale, and they are far cheaper to design in at the start than to bolt on after something has gone wrong.

What it does for the owner

  • Every deal, rule, score and turn timer is handled centrally, not on the player's own phone, so nobody can cheat by tampering with their screen
  • Credits handled as carefully as money: every movement is recorded and can never be edited, a stake is held before the game starts, and no game can pay out twice
  • A player whose connection drops goes straight back to the same point in the game, with spare time so a short drop does not cost them the hand
  • Full owner controls: players, credits, payouts and games, warnings about suspicious play, undoing a payout, a move-by-move replay of every hand, and every balance checked to the penny
  • Built for older players: large type, a choice of three looks, adjustable text size, a four-colour deck, keyboard shortcuts, a buzz when it is your turn and a setting to calm the animations
  • Works on a phone (sideways too), a tablet and a computer, and there is a demo version you can try straight away

The Filling Station

the-filling-station.co.uk

The Filling Station has been making its own pies, sausage rolls and filled rolls in East Lothian since 2003, and now runs three shops. It needed to be found online and ordered from online. I designed the brand and the site, connected collection and delivery ordering, set up its Google Business Profile and keep the whole thing running. It was done as a favour for a local business, and it is here because it is live.

What this means for your business

A local food business does not need a shop platform, an app or an agency charging a monthly fee they are tied into. It needs to be found, to be right when it is found, and to take an order without a phone call. That is a modest amount of well-placed work.

What it does for the owner

  • A brand and a site designed from scratch: home, about, the three shops with map links, catering and contact
  • Collection and delivery ordering connected from the site, so a customer goes from the menu to a paid order without ringing
  • Opening hours, phone number and the three locations kept right in one place, on the site and on Google
  • A Google Business Profile set up and looked after, so the shops appear on the map for the searches people actually make
  • Their web address, keeping the site online and changes all handled on their behalf, so the owners run a bakery rather than a website

GameBro

gamebro.co.uk

GameBro sells retro gaming handhelds to UK customers. It started as a single page and grew into a shop with a proper checkout, an owner dashboard and a blog that brings in visitors from Google, built and run without a monthly shop subscription in sight.

The services behind it: Website creation, Booking and reminder software and SEO

What this means for your business

A small business can have the same card payments, order handling and sales reports a big shop has, without the monthly platform fee, as long as it is built with care rather than pieced together from add-ons.

What it does for the owner

  • Card payments through Stripe, with prices held in one place so the shop and the checkout can never disagree
  • An owner dashboard for orders, posting, refunds and customer enquiries
  • Automatic emails when an order is posted, reminders to customers who left something in their basket, and a rewards scheme
  • A blog written around what customers actually search for, with every page labelled so Google understands it
  • Every product's details kept in one place, so changing a price is one edit and it updates everywhere at once
The top of itemfinder.co.uk, one of six online shops selling Bluetooth trackers, all run as one

ItemFinder

itemfinder.co.uk

ItemFinder is a shop selling Bluetooth item trackers, and five sister sites sell the same product to different kinds of buyer. Each has its own name, colours, lettering and wording, but behind the scenes all six run on one system, so an improvement made once shows up on all six.

What this means for your business

Build the system once and it can run several businesses at a time. The same idea works for one shop: what makes six shops cheap to run is what makes one shop cheap to change.

What it does for the owner

  • Six shops, each with its own web address and brand, sharing one system behind the scenes
  • Card payment built into the page, so the customer never leaves the shop to pay
  • A referral scheme: partners get their own login and link, and can see what they have earned
  • An owner dashboard: orders, posting, delivery labels, enquiries and alerts in one place
  • Over a hundred helpful articles that bring in visitors from Google, all managed from one place

A fair test of what actually brings buyers

Most businesses never get to test what brings in customers properly, because they only have one website. ItemFinder has six. Every storefront sells the same tracker to the same market, so the only thing that changes is the site itself: its own web address, its own brand, its own wording and picture descriptions, and over a hundred of its own articles. It is like trying six shop windows on the same street. One site speaks to iPhone owners, one to people who keep losing their keys, one to the technically minded who search for the Bluetooth standard by name.

All six run as one system, so every order records which site it came from. The owner's dashboard then lines up visits, search rankings (where each site shows up when people search on Google) and orders, site by site. I compared them over months, and judged them on orders, not on visitors. That showed which kinds of page, and which kinds of search words, bring people who actually buy, and which only bring people who read.

You can check all of this yourself: the six sites are live and linked above. The numbers behind them are shown in the first conversation, not quoted here.
